Illustration #2295

One method of getting traction on snow or ice is to tie sacks to the door handles of your car, and then drive over the sacks, having ensured that the rope is long enough to let the sacks trail free of the car once you have got going. This way you will not have to stop to retrieve the sacks until you have reached firmer ground.
